It was a profound meditation on agency and narrative that makes today’s choose-your-own-adventure streaming content look trivial by comparison.

These works succeeded because they were native to their medium. They couldn’t exist as paintings or sculptures or films. They required digital technology not as a convenience but as a fundamental component of their meaning. Contemporary digital art, by contrast, often feels like traditional art dressed up in digital clothing. Pretty pictures that happen to be displayed on screens rather than walls.

The Ghosts in Our Machines

Perhaps the most tragic loss is the disappearance of digital art’s utopian promise. The early pioneers believed they were building tools for liberation, creating new forms of expression that would be inherently more democratic, more participatory, more alive than anything possible in traditional media. They imagined a future where technology would amplify human creativity rather than replace it, where digital networks would connect artists and audiences in unprecedented ways.

Some of that vision survives in corners of the internet that venture capital hasn’t yet colonized. Artists like Zach Lieberman continue exploring the poetic possibilities of interactive technology. Stephanie Dinkins uses AI systems to examine questions of memory and identity that couldn’t be addressed through any other medium. These practitioners carry forward the experimental spirit of digital art’s golden age, but they’re working against a cultural current that increasingly values efficiency over exploration.

The blockchain art boom represents both the complete commodification of digital creativity and a strange return to its revolutionary roots. NFTs reduced art to speculative assets, but they also proved that purely digital objects could command the kind of cultural attention and financial value that the medium’s pioneers had always claimed they deserved. The technology that enabled this transformation might yet enable something more interesting.

What fascinates me most about this moment is how it forces us to confront what we actually value in art. Are we mourning the loss of digital art’s experimental edge, or are we simply uncomfortable with change? The artists who defined the medium’s early years would probably find our current debates as quaint as we find arguments about whether photography could ever be considered real art.

Maybe I’m wrong about all of this. Maybe we’re not witnessing digital art’s death but its adolescence, that awkward phase where everything feels wrong because the old rules don’t apply but the new ones haven’t been written yet.
